The piece was meant to meld these two styles as seamlessly as possible, while suspending them in the air in a way that does not suggest a mobile or other simplistic floating form. Suspension to Detail is derivative of the Baroque and Gothic architectural movements. The curvature of the filigrees are inspired by the Baroque era, and the archway itself is in the style of Gothic architecture. These two styles are eerily different very specific ways; Gothic architecture is rife with mathematical breakthroughs, such as the pointed arch (which became a more structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing way to support an open space; it a...

Memento

Circadian   Materials & Dimensions Pine Wood Wood Stain Beeswax 3 3/4" x 3 1/2" x 1/2" Artist Statement on Circadian Circadian is a memory response resulting from portraying some of the sensory elements of a particular memory. It's essentially as if a slice of time were solidified in an object the size of a palm. To make an object like this, the memory that begets it must be of a substantial caliber; there must be ample amounts of sight, smell, touch, audible memory that can be recalled. This memory must then be mentally stylized in a way that emphasizes certain aspects of the memory: these are the aspects that will be emphasized in the sculpture, and ultimately become the representative pieces of the memento. The memory that I chose was of me recording videos of myself drumming in my freshman year dorm. I had been struggling with depression, weight loss, and heavy drug use at the time, and I remember the physical act of drumming becoming...

3D to 2D

From Sculpture to Portraiture Premise This project is meant to compose a 2D image using photographs of the 3D artwork made throughout the semester. Grace Artist Statement Grace  is a heavily symbolic tryptic intended to outwardly contemplate a singular human existence from the perspective of the artist. The photographs depicted represent the intuitive, the mundane, and the inconspicuous detail aching to be ignored and screaming to be noticed that sleep in the conscious mind. The symbolism represents peace, incongruity, stoicism in peril, among a multitude of other transcendental concepts. One wing is fashioned to the model's back, representing the desire to behave in a morally perfect way, yet the large, jagged shoulder padding on the other side presents a painful misapprehension that this morality isn't possible in such a perturbedly mortal vessel. The crucifix is a symbol of perseverance through suffering; it is a monument to the toils of life in all things, but the primary representation originates in the childhood of the model: financial, educational, social, political, personal pain and struggle, ...

On Longing Interpretation

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale." Instagram Picture   This image fits with this quote, because the perspective places me (a large man) inside of a popsicle (which is realistically about as big as my hand). This silly little picture depicts the idea that humans are small things inside something bigger. It's an absurd representation of the human condition. "...capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience." Instagram Picture This picture represents the grandeur associated with grace bestowed from on high by God. This experience is only felt by a percentage of the population. Some people will never set foot in a church to know the name of God. This picture of a church is a monument which serves as a trace of authentic experience. "The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, & the 3-dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body." Instagram Picture This illustration is a r...
